STOP 3: Saint Sava Temple

Time at stop: 15 minutes

You’re now at the Temple of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world and a symbol of Serbian spirituality and national identity. Built on the spot where Ottoman forces allegedly burned the relics of Saint Sava, the temple is both a place of worship and a cultural monument.

📍 What to See in 15 Minutes

1. Exterior View & Main Square(5 min)

Admire the monumental white marble and granite façade, crowned with a massive central dome (70 m high with the cross). The open square features fountains and a large bronze statue of Saint Sava.

📸 Photo tip: Stand across the fountains to get the full temple in your shot — especially dramatic under the sun or at sunset.

2. Interior & Crypt (if open)(7–8 min)

If doors are open, enter the main nave to witness stunning golden mosaics and marble columns. Beneath the church lies the crypt, richly decorated and incredibly atmospheric — a hidden jewel.

🕯️ Note: Silence and respectful clothing are expected inside. Flash photography is not allowed.

3. Quick Walk Around(2–3 min)

Walk around the church to see the National Library, nearby monuments, or relax for a moment on the benches.

🧭 Quick Tips

  • Entry is free, but donations are welcome.

  • Watch for ongoing mosaic work — the interior is still under slow artistic construction.

  • The crypt is often open and rarely crowded — don’t miss it if time allows!

⛪ Fast Fact: Construction began in 1935, paused during wars and communism, and resumed seriously only in the 2000s. Today, it’s one of Belgrade’s proudest sights — visible from almost any high point in the city.

📸 Must-Do: Take a frontal photo from the lower square and one from the side to capture the church’s depth and size.
